About the Item

Jos Sances’ Día de los Muertos, November 2 is a densely layered allegory reflecting on the long shadow of European “discovery” and its ongoing consequences. Rendered with Sances’ trademark blend of satire, history, and social commentary, the print centers on animated skeleton figures—stand-ins for colonial powers—entangled with symbols of greed, extraction, religious fundamentalism, ecological ruin, and distorted systems of justice. Bees swarm chaotically, a turtle bears impossible weight, flames rise beneath a figure labeled “Greed,” and a skeletal bird attempts to balance a scale that can no longer hold equilibrium.

Printed in 2021 as a 22-inch square screenprint, this work channels the spirit of Día de los Muertos not as celebration alone, but as confrontation: a remembrance of those lost through centuries of exploitation and a warning about recurring cycles of power. Edition of 25. Medium: Screenprint Year: 2021 Image Size: 22 x 22 inches Edition of 25 Jos Sances was born John Joseph Sances in Boston and attended Montserrat School of Visual Art in Beverly, Massachusetts. For more than 40 years he has made his living as a printmaker and muralist in the San Francisco Bay Area. Jos is founder of Alliance Graphics, begun in 1989, a successful, union screenprint shop. Previously he co-founded Mission Grafica at the Mission Cultural Center in 1980 and worked there until 1988. Jos is also a founding and lifelong member of the Great Tortilla Conspiracy - a political performance group that produces satirical edible art screen printed with chocolate on tortillas.

El Sueno Despierta
By Juan Fuentes
Located in Palm Springs, CA
Signed, numbered and titled in pencil, from the edition of 30. Sueño Despierta (“Awake Dream”) is a visual meditation on identity, resilience, and cultural memory. Blending symbolic imagery with portraiture, the piece features a central figure whose eyes are open in a state of alert dreaming. Surrounding elements such as plants, spiritual motifs, and historical references evoke a deep connection to ancestral roots and collective struggle. Fuentes' intricate line work and layered textures create a dreamlike yet grounded atmosphere, emphasizing awakening not as an escape, but as a call to consciousness. The turbulent times of the 70’s set the tone for Fuentes' approach to creating social art...

My artwork is a conceptual fusion of opposite cultural realities that I have experienced in my lifetime. I integrate diverse elements: from pre-Columbian mythology, western religious iconography and American popular culture. On the border of this print surrounding the image the following is written: An American tourist is approached by a Mexican kid holding a small human skull in his hand. He asks him: “Hey Mister, do you want to buy Pancho Villa...
