Laurent Schkolnyk is internationally recognized as a master of the mezzotint, a demanding printmaking technique known for its rich tonal qualities and subtle gradations. Born in Paris in 1953, Schkolnyk studied drawing and etching at the Beaux-Arts in Nantes, where he later specialized in mezzotint under the guidance of Paul Guimezanes. Schkolnyk is particularly acclaimed for his innovative three-color mezzotint prints. In this process, he creates three separate plates, each inked with a primary color-yellow, magenta red, and cyan blue. By carefully superimposing these transparent inks, he achieves a full spectrum of colors, from luminous whites and vibrant reds to deep, velvety blacks, without relying on black ink itself. His compositions, often still lifes, are marked by geometric precision, organic forms, and a harmonious interplay of color and light, reflecting influences from Italian painter Giorgio Morandi and Chinese decorative motifs. Schkolnyk’s works have been widely exhibited and are held in major public and private collections around the world, attesting to his status as one of the few contemporary masters of the mezzotint medium

Laurent Schkolnyk
Laurent Schkolnyk was born in 1953 in Paris, France. It was at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Nantes, that he began mastering one of the most difficult artistic mediums called mezzotint. His work has been exhibited internationally at galleries and museums in Canada, France, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Thailand and the USA. His work is in many public and private collections including the Achenbach Foundation for the Arts, Bibliothèque Nationale, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Portland Art Museum.
