Chittering and Chattering, Linoleum Block Print, Ed. 10, 35 1/4 x 23 1/4 Inches is one of a series of 8 large (this size, various shades of blue) and 6 small (11 5/8 Inches x 11 5/8 Inches, various shades of blue ) linoleum block prints by Lisa Houck, a very established artist from Boston with a large following devoted to her exceptional paintings, watercolors, mosaics and prints reminiscent of Matisse and Aborigine art, with gorgeous color and a sensibility both playful and quite serious that is uniquely her own.
This print is not framed.
This print is currently on view in our 'BLUE' exhibition in conjunction with the 5 additional large format prints in this series and the 6 small format related prints which consist of the 6 individual "squares" printed in various shades of blue that comprise the large
Chittering and Chattering print discussed above.
Houck has also executed many large public art commissions for interior and exterior sites in Boston and nationwide which are ambitious murals in oil and mosaic in hospitals, libraries, playgrounds and other public buildings.

Lisa Houck is a highly established Boston artist with a large following devoted to her exceptional paintings, watercolors, mosaics, prints and public art projects. Among the many large public art commissions, Houck has completed for interior and exterior sites in Boston and nationwide in mosaic and mural format are permanent installations for The Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Children's Hospitals in Boston and Waltham, The Frieda Garcia Park, Fort Point Channel, The Cambridge Senior Center and 4 libraries in Broward County, Florida. Houck got her MFA in painting from Tufts University, School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 1989 her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, in 1975.

This piece is inspired by William Blake's poem 'TheTyger'. I design the image in my sketchbook and then transfer it to lino, which I hand-carve. Each print is handprinted in my studio using a roller press. As each print is individually handprinted, there may be slight variations in tone and colour. This print is made using gold oil-based ink as a background and then printed over with the tiger in dark purple ink. Each print has the title, edition number and my signature hand-written beneath the image.

At school I spent most of my time in the art department. I then went on to do a one year foundation course at Carlisle College of Art. It was here that I learnt the art of printmaking and then continued my studies at the Norwich School of Art doing a degree in graphic design. Keen to move to London I found my first job as a graphic designer with John Nash and Friends and my second with Michael Peters and Partners. I went on to win a D&AD (Design and Art Directors Club of Great Britain) silver award for the very first greeting stamps issued by the Royal Mail.
