About the Item

Serpent is an original etching artwork by Marcel Chirnoaga (Romanian, 1930–2008) one of the most important artists of fantasy painting and mythology subjects in the XX century. The artwork is from the series of "Inevitable monsters" book of hand made by the artist, which includes 13 etchings artworks all about mythological creatures. Hand-signed on the lower right, numbered on the lower left, edition of 56/70 prints. The State of preservation is very good. Sheet dimension: 58 x 40 cm. The artwork represents a scenery of angry serpents through intense black color, skillfully depicted by quick and confident strokes, showing mysterious of nature and wildness. The serpent is one of the oldest and most widespread mythological symbols. The Great Goddess often had snakes as her familiars, sometimes twining around her sacred staff, as in ancient Crete, and they were worshiped as guardians of her mysteries of birth and regeneration. Here stony bodies of men kneeing toward the Magnificent serpent symbolized the power of rebirthing of serpents by their skins and regeneration and created a scary scene of the world death, dead which are demanding do be born and rise again, it is characterized by a well-balanced composition to indicate mysterious world which is the artist style of creation. Marcel Chirnoaga (Romanian, 1930–2008), was a Romanian visual artist, graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics in Bucharest, 1952. Simultaneously pursuing liberal art studies, a member of the Union of Visual Artists in Romania since 1953. He created over 3,000 works in drawings, engravings, paintings and sculptures, being at the same time the author of the most important Romanian work from the end of the 20th century, the cycle of "Apocalypse" engravings.
