Untitled (Fossil), 1998
4 color lithograph on paper
Hand signed and numbered 74/100 in pencil on the lower right front
28 1/2 × 21 inches

Melissa Miller’s paintings are recognizable for their detailed portrayal of animals and the violence of the natural world. In compositions that range from landscapes crowded with figures in the style of Old Master history painting to surreal individual portraits, Miller contends with the strange and the mundane alike, employing her distinctly fantastical yet incisive vision.
Miller has shown her artwork extensively throughout the country, including exhibitions at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn, New York; The Albright Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York; the New Orleans Museum of Art, New Orleans, Louisiana; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, California; The New Museum, New York, New York; the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas; the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, Texas; The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas; and the Dallas Museum of Art, Texas. Miller represented the United States for the 41st Biennale di Venezia and has also exhibited in the prestigious Whitney Biennial.
Among her many honors, Miller has been the recipient of three individual Artist Fellowships from the National Endowments for the Arts (NEA), as well as awards from the Anonymous Was a Woman Foundation, the Dallas Museum of Art, The Art League of Houston, the Dallas Visual Arts Association, and the National Council of Arts Administrators. In addition, she was named “Texas State Artist of the Year” in 2011 by the Texas State Legislature.
Miller’s paintings are featured in many public collections, such as the Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, New York; the Dallas Museum of Art, Texas; The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas; the Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, Texas; The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California; The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.; the El Paso Museum of Art, Texas; the Orland Museum of Art, Florida; Sweet Briar College, Virginia; and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.

Critic Tris Mccall writes in a recent review:
"Felix the Cat is older than Mickey. He was created over a century ago, and he's been fading in plain view ever since sound was added to motion pictures. But in his Gilded Age prime, Felix was incredibly popular: famous enough to leave a burn mark in his image on the collective imagination. The spirit of the Cat retains enough psychic power to guide the hand of at least one contemporary artist - painter and sculptor Paul Leibow... This playful, irreverent work uses the figure of Felix, or what's left of him, to comment on sexuality, decay and reassembly, mechanical reproduction and corporate branding, and the ubiquity and ambiguity of the commercialized image..."
Lithograph with image concept invention of a non existent character: Feel licks ears over ads of vintage comics, creating a unique abstract work, including ghosted figures and cigarettes and coffee falling from an imagined earthquake. The attempt was to use a series from vintage characters that inform the piece, with a body inside the Feel Licks cat face structure. Includes a brain W-ray with lamb faces as a surreal interplay. 6-color print, derived from the artist Mark Rothko in a blend roll or orange and red hue. Limited edition print, signed recto from the edition of only 10
