Michele ZalopanyDog: realist expressive black and white portrait drawing of pet dog in the sun 1988
1988
About the Item
This tenderly illustrated print depicts a black dog sitting comfortably on the lawn. A low fence and a bench can be seen in the background. Plants grow along the sides of the lawn, bounded by smooth rocks. Zalopany used a photograph of her mother's dog as the inspiration for this tender work. This finely-drawn lithograph features Zalopany's characteristic mastery of light and shadow, from the dog's gleaming black coat, to the sun-dappled grass.

Born in 1955 in Detroit Michigan, Michele Zalopany is a contemporary American artist best known for her large-scale watercolor and pastel paintings based on photographs found in digital picture collections, old books, and flea markets, etc. Found photographs and film screen shots that had originally served other purposes -- family snapshots, police photos, real estate, travel documentation -- when rendered, directly from the image, with traditional art materials, take on additional meanings, such as socio-psychological-political content.
She exhibited in the 1989 Whitney Biennial and her work is included in more than 25 institutions including the Museum of Fine Art, Boston; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Yokohama Museum, Japan; Royal College of Art, London.

- Dead Bird for Craigie No. 2By Colin SelfLocated in New York, NYA contemporary of David Hockney and Peter Blake, Colin Self is an important British printmaker whose innovative etching techniques and novel use of found materials have defined his diverse oeuvre. Yet unlike most artists associated with Pop Art, Self eschewed glossy, colorful bombast for nuanced drawings in a limited palette. Self's imagery has ranged from the geopolitical -- nuclear bombers, fallout shelters; to American icons -- hot dogs, Coca Cola cans; to the everyday -- intimate scenes of animals and plants, and whimsical figure drawings. This arresting portrait of a raven's body is executed in moody shades of black and grey. A tangle of short, sharp marks swirls against the white background, resembling flying birds. At the top, hand written text reads: "dead bird...Category
