Up with the Rooster
Woodblock print
15 x 11 cm
Provenance: From the artist's estate sale.
Penelope Mary Ellis (1935–2016) was a British artist celebrated for her conceptual abstract works in the 1960s. Born in Hampstead, London, she was the eldest daughter of artists and educators Clifford and Rosemary Ellis.
Ellis attended the High School in Bath before enrolling at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1953 to 1956, focusing on sculpture. She was awarded a British Institute in Paris Scholarship for the 1956–1957 academic year, allowing her to further her art studies in France. Upon returning to England, Ellis taught art at Badminton School until her retirement in 1997.
Ellis was known for her pioneering conceptual abstract oil paintings in the 1960s, noted for being ahead of their time. Additionally, she created sculptures, ceramics, jewellery, and models, showcasing her versatility and commitment to professional craftsmanship.
This woodblock print depicts a rooster strutting across the farmyard. Its lines and shapes are irregular, suggesting either a deliberate folk-art influence or the natural texture of the woodblock carving process. Furthermore, Ellis makes use of the technique of 'negative space', creating contrasts between, for example, the bricks of the farm buildings and the rooster's body. This composition was likely produced in Ellis's early artistic career, before she shifted to more abstract conceptual work. In any case, it is a beautiful and evocative piece, capturing a rustic, almost timeless moment with striking simplicity.

Jean Lurçat (French: 1 July 1892 – 6 January 1966) was a French artist noted for his role in the revival of contemporary tapestry. In order to fully appreciate and understand the works of Jean Lurçat, one must view them in the context of the history of tapestry, in particular, the downfall of its existence during the rise of the Renaissance. It was during this time that tapestry was somewhat re-invented, where by traditional techniques were misplaced in the likening of tapestry to paintings by artists of the likes of Raphael. Jean Lurçat is largely responsible for its revival in the 20th century when he redefined the importance of designing tapestry in a way that embraced the integrity of authentic tapestry...

Antique Rooster Woodblock Print circa 1910 by Prosper Alphonse Isaac
Located in SANTA FE, NM
Antique Rooster Portrait
Prosper Alphonse Isaac (France, 1858-1924)
Woodblock Print circa 1910
9 x 7 1/8 (15 1/4 x 17 frame) inches
The excellent book "The Great Wave: The Influence of Japanese Woodcuts on French Prints" which was an exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1974, recounts the phenomenal "cult of Japan" in late nineteenth-century France and reveals through direct comparisons its particular impact on the graphic work of Manet, Degas, Cassatt, Bonnard, Vuillard, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Gauguin. This print directly relates to the discovery of Japanese art most notably through the woodblock prints which found their way to the West oftentimes as stuffing or packing materials from consumer goods that were being imported to the West at the end of the 19th century.
Prosper-Alphonse Isaac was born in a well-to-do family. This gave him the means not only of leaving his native Calais to pursue a career as an artist in Paris, but also the means to acquire art. Isaac was particularly drawn to Japanese arts, which he collected avidly. Many of the objects he bought were eventually given to museums. As a printmaker Isaac started drawing seascapes in dry point, but eventually moved on to become one of only a handful of artists versed in color woodcut techniques in France. His compositions, generally small in scale, are heavily influenced by the arts of Japan. He printed small editions of these works. Aside from this artistic activity, Isaac was also an active textile decorator.

Bob (Robert) Stanley (1932-1997) was a painter, photographer and printmaker whose early work was figurative painting about contemporary American life. In the 1960s and early 1970s, he based his paintings on photographs, which he manipulated from black and white or silkscreen colored shapes. In the early 1960's, he began to base his paintings on images clipped from newspapers and magazines, following the example of Pop artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, who would become his brother-in-law. Enlarged and often simplified to two vibrant saturated colors Stanley's images could be reduced to the abstract or be powerfully explicit. His preferred subjects, including rock stars, athletes and pornography, always seemed to grate against the pretenses of high art. Similar in bold use of color to Malcolm Morley. In the late 1960's Mr. Stanley started using his own photographs, basing paintings on images of tree branches or the ground, and also using pictures of life-drawing models at the School of Visual Arts.
