Yinka Shonibare CBE RA is a British-Nigerian artist known for his exploration of cultural identity, colonialism, and globalization through vibrant, textile-based works. Born in 1962 in London and raised in both the UK and Nigeria, Shonibare incorporates Dutch wax fabric—a material historically linked to colonial trade—as a signature element in his sculptures, installations, and paintings. His works often reference European art history, reimagining classical figures in elaborate, colorful costumes without facial features, highlighting themes of race, power, and hybridity. A Turner Prize nominee, his art has been exhibited globally, and he has received numerous honors, including a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).

Yinka Shonibare
Yinka Shonibare CBE, RA, is a British-Nigerian artist living in the United Kingdom. His work explores cultural identity, colonialism and post-colonialism within the contemporary context of globalisation. A hallmark of his art is the brightly coloured Ankara fabric he uses. He received the Whitechapel Gallery Art Icon Award in March 2021. He is the 8th recipient of this award, which celebrates artists who have made significant contributions to a particular medium.
