About the Item

Auguste Kronheim was born in Amsterdam in 1937. The artist produces woodcuts and drawings. She received her training in drawing from Hanns Kobinger and graduated from the Linz Bundesgewerbeschule, where she learned mainly the technique of woodcutting. In Linz she met the artist Fritz Aigner, to whom she was married between 1956 and 1962. Auguste Kronheim worked closely with her husband and even after their divorce they continued to have an intimate working relationship. For a time, the artist lived with her three children in the holiday home of her friends Heinrich and Annemarie Böll on the Irish island of Achill. Kronheim moved with her children to Dugort on Achill Island in 1964. She then moved to Dooega with the children and her new partner Michael White. During this time she produced many works related to her stay in Ireland. She gave birth to a fourth child in 1965, who was adopted by Heinrich Böll. In 1966 she returned to Austria after her residence permit for Ireland expired. Auguste Kronheim and Fritz Aigner lived and worked together again until she moved to Kirchberg on the Danube. In Linz she met the young writer Werner Kofler and moved to Vienna with him and their children in 1970. She had twins with Werner Kofler and they separated in 1990. Auguste Kronheim then began to explore the traditions of Tibetan woodblock printing. The artist travelled to Naples several times between 1991 and 1996. This enabled her to become acquainted with the traditional printing techniques of the monasteries. Her artistic work was extremely determined during this period. Auguste Kronheim lives in Vienna today. One of her sons is the painter Brendan Kronheim. Auguste Kronheim mainly worked in the technique of woodcut. Her motifs show the hard, meagre and often ruthless life she experienced in the Mühlviertel, in Ireland or later in Nepal. They visualise the traditions and myths she experienced on her travels. Her stylistic devices are provocation, snub and exaggeration. Her woodcuts are characterised by a dualism between plasticity and flatness. The two-dimensionality is created by clear delineating contours between the black and white surfaces, whereas fine hatching or patterning can create an effect of depth. The black or white areas can move into the foreground or background of the picture through specific structuring. Depending on the design of the figures, they can stand out or appear flat. source: couchgallery Auguste Kronheim
