THIS IS AN INTERPRETATION OF THE ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHS AND NOT ORIGINALS The collection titled Moby Dick: The Passion of Ahab, featuring twenty-six color lithographs by American artist Benton Murdoch Spruance, was published in 1968 by Barre Publishers, located in Barre, Massachusetts. This portfolio includes twenty-six color offset photolithographs and one color lithograph, accompanied by a booklet with analysis by author Lawrance Thompson, correlating excerpts from Herman Melville's Moby Dick with Spruance's prints.

Benton Spruance (1904 – 1967) was an American painter, printmaker and architect from Philadelphia. As a printmaker, Spruance was known for his innovations in color lithography with series of works relating to mythological and religious themes, as well as portraiture. He was much more than a distinguished artist of national renown. His career focused in a large part upon service to the art community, not only in Philadelphia, but throughout the nation as well, and much of his importance lies in all that he was able to accomplish for his fellow artists. He had a keen sense of the place of the artist in the life of the community, and as a founder of the Philadelphia chapter of Artists Equity, he helped to give to the individual artist a strong voice in community affairs. His prints, taken in chronological sequence, constitute a unique record of his times, his world, and his experience. But above all he emerges clearly as a warm, compassionate human being.

This powerful limited edition lithograph by William Steen was published in 1988 as part of the Art Against Aids portfolio, numbered 38/50.
Superb provenance as it is was acquired from the original Art Against AIDS Portfolio published in Houston, Texas. This will be the first time the work will be removed from the portfolio. The late 1980s was the height of the AIDS epidemic, and this was one of many efforts by the creative community to raise funds to assist in fighting this deadly scourge that disproportionately affected the artistic community.
William Steen 1949-2008
William Steen, artist, collector, curator, and mystic, died of pancreatic cancer on December 20 in New York, where he has lived since 2001. Long time framer at the Menil Collection, the soft-spoken Steen is remembered in Houston where he had his first exhibition of paintings in 1978 at the Roberto Molina Gallery. In 1984 Steen made his first of several trips to India, photographing thousands of Tibetan Buddhist ritual paintings. A champion of outsider art, in 2000 he tangled with the Houston Police over the grafitti mural he comissioned for the walls of the reclaimed Sterling Cleaners...
