About the Item

Doors of Perception 5 is one of a series of 12 unique color variations of this title. The digital pigment print with diamond dust on canvas is signed and titled on the verso, and framed in a contemporary, black wood moulding. Reference and appropriation occupy hallowed ground in art history - since the earliest days of artist’s workshops, copying the work of the masters was a technique used to hone one’s skills. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the practice of referencing and remaking great works became a means of placing oneself in dialogue with the masters and declaring one’s place within the canon. Carrying the tradition of referencing the canon into New Media art, Brad Faine (1945- ) is a renaissance man: a master printmaker, professor, artist, published author and inventor. It comes as no surprise then that when contemplating the way forward, Faine is also attracted to that which came before. His works reference literature and art; as well as veering into pure abstraction and employing letters to add a linguistic element. His images are smart and layered – by using the computer to create and manipulate images, Faine’s practice places him in dialogue with other artists who have embraced digital tools such as David Hockney and his iPad drawings. Simultaneously, with his appropriation of existing imagery to give form to message, his appreciation of literature, and his pointed tweaks at social issues, Faine is also in dialogue with Dada artists such as Hannah Höch or Kurt Schwitters.

Doors of expression
Located in New York, US
Martin worked as the assistant to legendary artist Sam Gilliam for 12 years in his D.C. studio, after graduating from Carnegie Mellon where Sam was his Masters Mentor and guide. Over the past decade, he has incorporated mixed media and found objects into his abstract expressionist oil paintings on canvas, introducing new textural quality similar to Gilliam arts, which he helped to originate while his assistant. Martin received a B.F.A. degree from SUNY Purchase where he was inspired by figurative and abstract expressionism which evolved into his own style which Sam discovered in recruiting him to come to Pittsburgh to study for his M.F.A. degree with him where he credits his further artistic development with Gilliam. His works have been acquired by corporate patrons such as the Estée Lauder Companies, Eli Lilly and Company, Citigroup, Agatha Gund (past Chr of M.O.M.A) and Bill Kurtis TV Productions , who produced a TV special on A&E Channel entitled, "The Shattered Mind." His work has been featured in both group and solo exhibitions and presented two solo exhibitions at Fountain House Gallery in support of mental health. The prestigious New York gallery Vivian Horan Fine Art presented a solo exhibition of his work. Martin's work was also showcased in a solo show at the corporate headquarters of Estée Lauder Companies. Martin Cohen...
