About the Item
Still Life – But Not as We Know It 5 is one of a series of 12 unique color variations of this title. The digital pigment print with diamond dust on canvas is signed and titled on the verso, and framed in a contemporary, black wood moulding.
Reference and appropriation occupy hallowed ground in art history - since the earliest days of artist’s workshops, copying the work of the masters was a technique used to hone one’s skills. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the practice of referencing and remaking great works became a means of placing oneself in dialogue with the masters and declaring one’s place within the canon.
Carrying the tradition of referencing the canon into New Media art, Brad Faine (1945- ) is a renaissance man: a master printmaker, professor, artist, published author and inventor. It comes as no surprise then that when contemplating the way forward, Faine is also attracted to that which came before. His works reference literature and art; as well as veering into pure abstraction and employing letters to add a linguistic element. His images are smart and layered – by using the computer to create and manipulate images, Faine’s practice places him in dialogue with other artists who have embraced digital tools such as David Hockney and his iPad drawings. Simultaneously, with his appropriation of existing imagery to give form to message, his appreciation of literature, and his pointed tweaks at social issues, Faine is also in dialogue with Dada artists such as Hannah Höch or Kurt Schwitters.

Brad Faine
Born in Brighton, Brad Faine is an internationally recognized artist and printmaker, who founded and managed the renowned Coriander Studio for forty years. Using vibrant colors, Faine’s artwork is fundamentally conceptual and often a response to current affairs or a reflection on the human condition using political, historical and popular references. He is heavily influenced by British and American Pop Art as well as graphic design techniques. While Faine creates the majority of his images on the computer, he considers himself to be working within the tradition of ‘easel painting’. Faine explains, “It is important to actually work on the making of images, as the process invariably leads to the discovery of new ideas, and hopefully helps to produce something that is a pleasant surprise and not a slavish facsimile of the point of departure; indeed it is often the case that the residue of an idea leads to other ideas.” After leaving college in 1972, Brad and his wife Jane founded the Coriander Studio and cultivated it from a cottage industry to an internationally renowned printer and publisher of limited edition silkscreen and later digital prints. Coriander Studio produced editions for over 230 artists, including Erté, Damien Hirst, and Richard Hamilton in its forty-year history. The studio’s own publications consist of works by Peter Blake, Sandra Blow, Terry Frost, John Hoyland, Bruce McLean, Brendan Neiland, and Storm Thorgerson. Faine’s works are in many private and public collections in the U.K., the United States, and the Middle East, and have been featured in mixed shows in London, New York, Dubai and Tokyo. Recent exhibitions include one-man shows at the Chelsea Arts Club and the London Sketch Club; a three-month exhibition with Steve Thomas at Chelsea Future Space; and a major joint print show with Peter Blake and Brendan Neiland at Leicester City Art Gallery.

Catalogue - Feldman Schellmann, #159 (II.159 Skulls 1976)
Andy Warhol’s Skulls from 1976 are part of the transition he began initially in 1972 with the Mao series – incorporating hand-drawn lines into the image – and with Ladies and Gentlemen and Mick Jagger in 1975 where he began the print process with his own photographs rather than appropriated ones. Additionally, in the 1975 prints, he began using collaged elements – torn paper, photographic elements, etc.
Donna de Salvo writes about the Skulls series, “Skulls (II.157 – 160) lies somewhere between the genres of still life and portraiture and is based on a photograph of a skull taken by Warhol’s studio assistant, Ronnie Cutrone. The theme of skulls became a major preoccupation for Warhol, and he produced numerous versions of it in paintings. In this image, Warhol combined all three pictorial forms...
