About the Item

Cecile Plaisance's evocative photographic career began with a doll. As a young girl inundated with images of beauty, Plaisance started taking photos of the plastic playmate who was a constant fixture in the world of young girls - Barbie. At first, she aimed to make life more lighthearted by creating sweet reminders of childhood innocence. As Plaisance's photography progressed, she linked Barbie to the modern woman juggling daily life while playing with her iconic femininity as a wife, mother, friend, and lover. Women aspire to live fully and intensely multi-faceted lives despite differences in cultures, clothes, and career paths. The artist adds humor to her Barbie character by targeting men who expect sexiness in women amid daily mundanity. Plaisance's childhood idol supports the challenges of women today as they defend their rights, desires, and hard-fought freedom.
