Edward Burtynsky
Silver Lake Operations #15, Digital Chromogenic Color Print

2007

About the Item

Edward Burtynsky is one of Canada’s most internationally acclaimed photographers. He is well-known for his captivating, and curiously beautiful, large-scale photographs documenting the ramifications of industrial production on nature. The recipient of many prestigious international awards, Burtynsky creates photographs of human-inflicted environmental catastrophes that are hauntingly beautiful. As such, he often sets up a strange dichotomy of attraction and repulsion in his photographs. This piece is an aerial photograph of Lake Lefroy in Western Australia, from the artist's "Mining" series. With this highly-abstract image and its painterly composition, the viewer is left with a sense of unease after a further inquiry into what is being depicted. It is a paradigm of this dialogue between beauty and devastation that is at the center of his photographic output. His work is represented in over 50 museum collections around the world ranging from The National Gallery of Canada, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, to Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and Bibliothèque National, Paris. “Silver Lake Operations #15, Lake Lefroy, Western Australia, 2007” Digital Chromogenic Color Print Signed by the artist on label verso. • The Far Shore
    By Joyce Wieland
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
Joyce Wieland (1931-1998) was one of the most accomplished and versatile Canadian artists of the 20th century. Emerging on the Toronto art scene in the early 1960s, throughout her career Wieland would explore the role of women, the body, nationalism, and intimacy using a variety of mediums. During much of the 1970s, Wieland was consumed by the creation (and recovery) of making her single feature film "The Far Shore". Her all-encompassing approach included writing the script, directing, co-producing, and trying to finance the project, a task that she notoriously despised. The film was loosely inspired by the life and death of the Canadian painter, Tom Thompson...
