About the Item

This original lithograph by Étienne Moreau-Nélaton was published in 1898 as Plate 198 in the renowned Les Maîtres de l’Affiche series. Titled Travailleurs de France, Apportez tous votre pierre à Notre-Dame du Travail, it was created to rally French workers to contribute symbolically to the construction of the church of Notre-Dame du Travail in Paris. Étienne Moreau-Nélaton (1859–1927) was a French painter, art collector, historian, and curator, celebrated for his sensitive compositions rooted in social and cultural themes. His artistic style often combined realism with moral purpose, reflecting his commitment to both art and society. In this poster, men and women walk solemnly, each bearing a stone to build the church dedicated to the dignity of labour. The composition conveys solidarity, humility, and devotion, with the towering figure of the Virgin Mary and Child overlooking the construction in the background. Its restrained earthy palette and fluid lines evoke the spirit of working-class piety and collective effort in late 19th-century France. Printed as part of Les Maîtres de l’Affiche, the landmark collection curated by Jules Chéret to showcase the finest posters of the era, this work bears the blindstamp lower right. Today, it stands as a rare testament to Moreau-Nélaton’s artistic vision and to the era’s fusion of social messaging and fine art. Religion - France The masters of posters Pl.198 Printed by Chaix
