Basted Waves is a lithograph on paper with an image size of 2 x 3 inches, initialed 'FMB' lower right and annotated lower left, framed in a contemporary silver and dark gray frame. Numbered 90/250 from the edition of 300 (there were also 50 APs).
In Brennan's surreal world, a needle stitches waves to the shoreline. Calvin Tomkins wrote of her art that 'her paintings take us, charmed and astonished, to a perfectly real, perfectly realized world turned topsy-turvy by her wit and imagination.'
Fanny Brennan’s innovative approach to painting is immediately clear in the small size of her work, which never exceeds a few inches square. Her surreal images, rendered in meticulous detail, mingle realism with fantasy as she poses familiar objects in unexpected surroundings. She paints what she likes - sky, seashells, ribbons, rooms, waterfalls, books, pencils, small household objects. In the process, they become exactly what they are, and a good deal more besides.
