About the Item
"From Ilsee, Princess of Tripoli Recto: "Visiting Women" Verso: "Departing Pilgrims" is an original color lithograph by Alphonse Mucha. Exquisite double-sided color lithographs from "Ilsee, Princesse de Tripoli," a rare illustrated book. Original Color Lithograph, rare proof before text.
Alphonse Mucha was a Czech artist who lived and worked in Paris during the Art Nouveau period of the late nineteenth century and was known for his stylized and decorative painting, advertising, and graphic work. In 1902, the artist published the successful "Documents Decoratifs." In 1897, Mucha was asked to design 34 color lithographs for the novel "Ilsee, Princesse de Tripoli" by Robert de Flers, the story of a forlorn prince and his faraway lover. Because of the nature of the story, Mucha was able to vary the mood of his illustrations by alternating between abstraction and illustration. The artist's exquisite decorative patternmaking is evident: he combined figurative illustrations with stylized or abstract ornamentation to create a visual interpretation of the written word. In "Visiting Women," the margins of the page are adorned with a stylized pattern of lilies, curving in alternate directions. The figures in the upper center of the page bend and curve like the flowers. Here, the artist joins the figurative and the decorative by employing similar colors and pattern; it is as if the figures emerge from the lilies. The artist unites three styles of expression--realistic, stylized, and abstract--in a single composition.

Alphonse Mucha is synonymous with Art Nouveau, a style of fine art, decorative art, and architecture that broke with the academicism of the 19th century in favor of florid lines inspired by the natural environment. A lithographed advertising poster he was commissioned to create for a play featuring the celebrated actress Sarah Bernhardt in 1894 catapulted him out of obscurity and brought him instant success as a commercial artist. Rendered in pale pastels, much of his work depicts beautiful young women draped in Neoclassical robes set amidst flowers, feathers, and other sensuous natural forms. He was celebrated not only for illustrating advertising posters, but also for painting, book illustrations, sculpting, and designing theater sets, jewelry, and wallpaper.

- "La Vache Enragee" iconic vintage poster by Toulouse-LautrecBy Henri de Toulouse-LautrecLocated in Hinsdale, ILTOULOUSE-LAUTREC, HENRI DE (1864-1901) "LA VACHE ENRAGÉE" Wittrock P27B, Adhemar 197 Original color lithograph Wittrock’s State III of III with letters Printed on buff wove paper, c. 1896 Bears artist stamp “TL” upper right, dated 96 Image size: 22 1/2” x 23 5/8” Several examples are known where Lautrec drew on work by other artists whom he admired. In this poster there are clear references to Adolphe Willette's humorous themes and rococo style of illustration. Willette was the founder and illustrator of the short-lived monthly “La Vache Enragee”(the angry cow) edited by the cartoonist Adolphe Roedel. This colored poster of the same title was commissioned for the appearance of the magazine March 1896. As a reference to the wretched financial state of most artists, the term “manger de la vache enrage” (meaning roughly, “meaning not having enough to eat”) was adopted as the motto for the “Vachalcade”which was held on Montmarte annually from 1896. This was an artists' procession, with fanfares and allegories on fame and the muses; it also included a furious cow and a troupe of pretty girls as a satire on Europa with the bull. The event was organized by Roedel"(Adriani p.217) Toulouse-Lautrec took up lithography at a high point in its history, when technical advances in color printing and new possibilities for large scale led to a proliferation of posters as well as prints for the new bourgeois collector. In his short career, he created more than three hundred fifty prints and thirty posters, as well as lithographed theater programs...Category
