Bettino Craxi
Arab Game - Photolithograph by Bettino Craxi - 1990s

1990s

About the Item

Arab Game is a photolithograph realized in the 1990s by the Italian politician Bettino Craxi. Hand-signed in marker on the lower right. Artist's proof. Very good conditions. In the portfolio " Tunisiaca d'aprés Auguste Lumière ". This is a collection of photolithographs taken from original slabs by A. Lumiére and their sons, dedicated to Tunisia by Bettino Craxi in honor of the centenary of the Lumière brothers. After first series, Craxi would create in 1996 a Tunisiaca II , a second collection of the series, lithographs that reproduce some landscapes and scenes of everyday life in Tunisia, and then Tunisiaca III D'Apres Auguste Lumiére in 1997. With his camera, Bettino Craxi , stained by the public accusation of corruption, observed his new country of exile, Tunisia , declaring: " I am locally in contact with sporting, cultural and social associations, and kindly informed about their activities. I have contacts with a publishing house and a print shop in Tunis who edited three lithographic series that I produced, two in the brothers' centenary Lumière, and one later ". In this desperate situation, he realized this and more wonderful photolithographs, saying: " In these conditions, while on the one hand I thank God for being still alive, on the other I continue to live as I can, defending my freedom and my life, since I think one equals another, according to an equation that in my mind it is well rooted and very lucid ." Indeed, in August of 1993, in front of a speechless Parliament, he made the historic speech that sounded like a challenge to the whole Italian political class: " Stand if you have never taken illicit financing in this country ". Then he remembers the money paid by the Soviets to the PCI and the paramilitary apparatus of the KGB in Italy. However, overwhelmed by the judicial scandals and pursued by the arrest warrants of the Mani Pulite pool in Milan, Craxi decided not to go to court and in 1994 he fled to his villa in Hammamet, Tunisia, where heads of state and politicians from all over the world once loved being hosted. For six years, Italy has pretended to forget him: a few politicians visited him, only a few friends stayed by his side.

Backyard Garden belongs to the set of twenty lithographs from the “Snatched Ecstasy of Yue Minjun”, which comes as a limited edition of 130 rare books. The work of Yue Minjun is instantly recognizable with its uniform laughing faces, the artist's faces. Minjun creates various realities against which the laughing figures are rendered, thus creating ambiguous images, often with the sinister atmosphere, which comes as his personal cynical reaction to various social and political dimensions of contemporary Chinese realities. Immediately humorous and sympathetic, Yue Minjun’s paintings offer a light-hearted approach to philosophical enquiry and contemplation of existence. Yue’s self-portraits have been describe by theorist Li Xianting as “a self-ironic response to the spiritual vacuum and folly of modern-day China”, thus the acidic tones and commercialized vacuity of his works are used to underscore the insincerity of his figures’ mirth. “Art should be an expression of one's particular feelings and should be direct and deep. So I drew one person, and then added another and another until there were crowds of them. Then I felt my emotions to be fully expressed.„ —Yue Minjun YUE MINJUN Yue Min-Jun (born 1962, Daqing, China) is one of the leading Chinese artists. He is best known for oil paintings depicting formations of his laughing self-portraits in various settings. His iconography is easily recognisable, it challenges social and cultural conventions by depicting objects and political issues in a radical, abstract, ironic and cynical manner. Yue Min-Jun initially started painting as a hobby, subsequently he graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Hebei Normal University, China in 1985. In the 90s he joined an artist community in Yuan Ming...
