About the Item

Dorothy Simpson Krause’ “Goddesses” (1991) is an early digital collage print with pastel in which the artist has layered multiple images, creating a visual mash-up of two iconic works of art, each a symbol of femininity and sexuality: the Venus of Willendorf and Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe. The Venus of Willendorf is believed to be one of the oldest surviving works of art, and one of the earliest depictions of the human body, while the highly recognizable image of Marilyn Monroe is appropriated from one of Andy Warhol’s 1962 silkscreened images of the actor. These art historical references are weighted with humankind’s interest in symbols of fertility that stretches back into the dawn of time, and reaching from high art to pop art. Printed on a dot matrix printer, this work has a soft, textile-like quality, particularly visible in the darker areas. Krause is a painter, collage artist and printmaker with long experience of incorporating digital mixed media into her art. She is deeply inspired by history, nature, travel, and innovative art making processes. Her work is exhibited regularly in galleries and museums and featured in numerous current periodicals and books. Krause is Professor Emeritus at Massachusetts College of Art where she founded the Computer Arts Center and a member of Digital Atelier®, an artists collaborative. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and symposia and a consultant for manufacturers and distributors of products which may be used by fine artists. 'Papiers collés' or collage was first used as an artist's technique in the early twentieth century to generate a kind of abstraction. Digital collage allows the artist to appropriate or reuse images in original compositions, thereby creating new meanings. The print is 13.25 x 16 inches, in a silver metal 23.25 x 24.25 inch frame. While the price includes the frame, it shows some light wear consistent with the age of the work. The print is in excellent condition.
