Esser’s „Giverny“ Series depict Monet’s famous garden from a different angle than what we are used to seeing, exploring the common visual memory of this place and deconstructing it by taking the images to a level of abstraction where the place itself becomes almost unrecognizable. "Landscapes are like states of mind. Everyone carries a landscape within them, one they naturally idealize." —Elger Esser “Nocturnes à Giverny”, from the original large-scale “Giverny VII”, is a view of the famous water lily lake at sunset, shortly before nightfall. With its warm golden-red colors, it evokes a romantic atmosphere. However, this atmosphere is obliterated by the level of extreme abstraction Esser takes the image to. With its extremely low skyline, barely visible through the reflection of the trees in the lake, and with the strong contrast of almost black shadows and reflections against the golden water, this image is an unsettling deconstruction of any romantic topic of the water lily lake. ELGER ESSER Elger Esser (born 1967 in Stuttgart, raised in Rome) is known for his silent, almost meditative large-format landscapes. Although a student of Bernd and Hilla Becher, Esser nevertheless backed away from their characteristic industrial and architectural landscapes to pursue the exploraiton of nature. German photographer Elger Esser (born 1967 in Stuttgart, raised in Rome) is usually associated with silent, almost meditative landscapes in large formats and with earthy colors. Esser was a student of Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Academy of Arts in Dusseldorf, the same school where talents such as Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, and Thomas Struth were formed. While clearly influenced by their teachings, Esser nevertheless backed away from their characteristic industrial and architectural landscapes and the rigorous style connected with them. "Romanticism was a movement which shook-up very elementary things; it was an insurrectionary movement." —Elger Esser Esser’s semi-romantic landscapes are unmanipulated and usually work with a very low horizon line in a simple, almost empty composition. Nature becomes a totality, indefinite and mysterious, but yet also calming and steady. Sky and water blur into each other to a point of complete disappearance, where everything seems to be mirrored by the same vast emptiness of the sky. As one of the most prominent photographic artists in Germany, Esser's works can be found in the collections of top museums and galleries in New York, Paris, and Amsterdam.

The pictures are only for illustrative reasons, the work is offered unframed. An avid winter sportsman, Peter Doig lived in Zermatt for six weeks in 2020 and for four months in 2021, working out of a studio on the mountain. With his inventive, painterly approach, the artist uses alpine imagery and traditional printmaking techniques to investigate landscape, material, and form. These diverse series of etchings reflects a self-referential process of experiment and innovation in which works continuously evolve into their final form. Together, this body of work pays homage to Doig’s passion for skiing and connection to Zermatt, while also referencing a rich tradition of alpine paintings...

  • Balaclava - The target in sight -

Heinrich Haberl (1869 Passau to 1934 Munich), Sturmhaube, c. 1900. drypoint, 14 x 10 cm (platemark), 28 x 21 cm (sheet size), 39 x 29 cm (passe-partout), titled "Sturmhaube" in lead at lower left and inscribed "Kaltnadelradierung", signed and locally inscribed "Heinrich Haberl Mchn. [Munich]" at lower right, inscribed again in lead on verso and with old collection stamp. - slightly darkened, fixed and mounted - The target in sight - About the artwork The theatrical "role-portrait" is to be seen against the background of the Rembrandt cult, which reached its climax at the end of the 19th century. The soldier seems to have stepped straight out of Rembrandt's Night Watch (1642) to fix something outside the picture with an alert and ready gaze. The steeply rising brim of the morion frames the gaze and thus perspectivises it as the actual 'pictorial action'. The gaze represents both the vigilant defence and the visionary goal of the battle. Not only the subject, but also the style of the etching needle reflect Rembrandt's understanding of the times. Strong contrasts of light and dark are created in a virtuoso free stroke, without losing the effect of the reflections on the helmet and in the eyes. This shows a kinship with the early prints of Lovis Corinth, who also saw himself as an artist in the role of the knight. Against this background, Haberl's picture can also be seen as a representation of his artistic self-image. About the artist Heinrich Haberl first attended the art school in Nuremberg and from 1892 studied at the Munich Academy. There he was a master student of Johann Leonhard von Raab, Rudolf von Seitz, Franz von Defregger...
