This artwork "Boy Riding a Bull" c.1980 is an original color lithograph on paper by noted Bolivian artist Graciela Rodo Boulanger, b.1935. It is hand signed and numbered 33/200 in pencil by the artist. The artwork (image) size is 8.25 x 8.25 inches, framed size is 16.35 x 16.25 inches. Custom framed in a metal gold frame, with light grey matting and double brown fillet. It is in excellent condition, the frame have very minor light scratches, barely visible. About the artist: Born in La Paz, Bolivia in 1935, Graciela Rodo Boulanger was raised in an artistic environment. Her mother, a concert pianist, and her father, a businessman and art connoisseur, nurtured her talents. She studied the piano and at age 11 enrolled in the School of Fine Arts. At 17 she went to Vienna to study both art and music, and at 22 shetravelled to Argentina for the stimulating artistic environment of Buenos Aires. Continuing to study both piano and painting, she gave art exhibitions as well as concerts. It had been her desire to pursue both, however the two careers were so demanding that a choice had to be made. Boulanger decided to devote herself to her creative expression through painting. While in Buenos Aires she had two of the most significant meetings of her life. She met Claude Boulanger, the French diplomat whom she would later marry, and saw her first etching by Johnny Friedlaender, considered to be one of the finest engravers in the world. As a result, she studied with Friedlaender at his Paris studio from 1961 until 1968. Her work has gained international fame and success and since her first one-woman show in Vienna in 1953, she has worked in many other mediums including etching, lithography, watercolor, pastel, and sculpture. In 1979 UNICEF designated her as their official artist for her “Year of the Child” poster. Also, two of her tapestries were presented in the public hall of the U.N. General Assembly. The Museum of Modern Art of Latin America in Washington DC gave her a retrospective show of her oeuvre in 1983. In 1986, the Metropolitan Opera of New York commissioned her to do the poster for their production of Mozart’s “Magic Flute,” and a show of her paintings with opera and ballet themes was held by the art gallery of Lincoln Center. Boston Mayor Raymond Flynn honored. Graciela Boulanger by declaring October 16, 1987th as “Graciela Rodo Boulanger Day”, USA. In 1993, the World Federation of the United Nations chose to use one of her oil paintings, “Viaje Imaginario,” to illustrate a stamp issue and accompanying limited-edition print with the theme of endangered species. Her works are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art of Latin America, Washington D.C.; the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris; the Museum of Modern Art in La Paz; and the Modern Art Center in Zurich, to name a few. Graciela Rodo Boulanger

Graciela Rodo Boulanger was born in 1935 in La Paz, Bolivia. From an early age, she was surrounded by art and music due in part to her mother being a concert pianist and her father an art connoisseur. By the age of 17, she had studied both in Chile and Vienna and had exhibited paintings and given piano recitals in over five countries. At 22 she made the difficult decision to abandon her musical studies in order to devote all of her time and energy to painting and making prints.

In 1960, Boulanger held an exhibition in Argentina where she became one of the winners of the First Latin American Xylography Competition. (Xylography is a form of woodblock printmaking.) After viewing an etching by Johnny Friedlaender, she moved to Paris in 1961 where she studied under the renowned artist. During this time, she was able to improve upon her style and technique as well as gain worldwide recognition for her oil paintings, etchings and lithographs.

In 1966, Boulanger first exhibited in the United States and began to publish editions of her engravings. Within two short years, she had established her own etching studio.

In 1979, Boulanger was designated by UNICEF as the official artist for the "International Year of the Child" poster. The Metropolitan Opera of New York commissioned Boulanger's poster for their performance of Mozart's The Magic Flute in 1986. The World Federation of the UN Associations chose one of Boulanger’s paintings in 1993 to use on a stamp and as a limited-edition print. The proceeds benefitted the preservation of endangered species.

In 2005, Boulanger left Paris and moved back to her home in La Paz, Bolivia, where her daughter Sandra and her grandchildren have been a constant source of inspiration for her art.

Today Boulanger’s work, which is known worldwide for the artist’s stylized treatment of the continuous theme of children, can be seen in museums such as La Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, the Modern Art Center in Zurich and the Museum of Modern Art of Latin America. Boulanger has participated in more than 150 exhibitions on all five continents.
