Corneille was the pseudonym of Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo, born July 4, 1922 in Liège (Belgium), of Dutch parents, and died in Auvers-sur-Oise (Val-d'Oise) September 5, 2010, he was a Dutch painter, engraver, sculptor and ceramist After attending the School of Fine Arts in Amsterdam, Corneille began exhibiting in 1946, then discovered surrealism. Co-founder in 1948 with Karel Appel, Eugène Brands, Constant Nieuwenhuis, Anton Rooskens and Theo Wolvecamp, of the Experimentele Groep in Holland movement which publishes the journal Reflex, anticipating the magazine Cobra (journal) which would appear the following year in Denmark, Belgium, then in the Netherlands. He is one of the initiators of Cobra with Karel Appel, Constant Nieuwenhuis, Asger Jorn and Dotremont. This group was soon joined by poets, painters and writers including Jacques Doucet, Pierre Alechinsky, Henry Heerup, Reinhoud, Else Alfelt, Carl-Henning Pedersen, Egill Jacobsen, C.O. Hultén, Anders Osterlind, Max Walter Svanberg. In 1949, Corneille undertook his first trip to North Africa where he discovered the Arab and Berber world. He participated in a first collective exhibition in Paris with Karel Appel and Constant at the Galerie Colette Allendy and in a Cobra event at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 1953, he began etching in Stanley William Hayter's Atelier 17 in Paris. After having evolved towards abstraction (abstract landscaping) after the break-up of the Cobra group in 1951, Corneille returned to figuration in the early 1960s. Impressed by the luxuriance of nature in some countries visited (Africa, South America, Mexico ...), he finds the expressionist and passionate vocabulary of the Cobra period. In his later lyrical works, the woman (who would represent the earth in the artist's language), the bird (the male element and the artist himself), the sun and the snake (symbols of the female and male sex) as well as the cat are omnipresent. His first ceramics date from 1954 and his first polychrome wood sculptures from 1992. The same year, he made a trip to Africa for the shooting of a film, directed by Jos Wassink, which will be shown on the occasion of the exhibition designed by Ronald A.R. Kerkhoven : Corneille, le visage Africain, at the Museuon (The Hague). In Paris, he exhibited in 1964 at the Mathias Fels gallery, gathering around the art dealer painters of narrative figuration like Hervé Télémaque. Several photographic albums devoted to his travels in Africa and his collection of African art were published in 1977. He established his first contacts with the Asian world (China, Japan, Indonesia). From 1982 to 1992, he participated in numerous exhibitions and developed his graphic work undertaken in 1948. Several monographs are devoted to him. In 1999, as a lithographer, he discovered aquagravure, and worked with Éditions l'Estampe and their workshops. Aquagravure is a recent technique between sculpture and lithography. This relief is well suited to the marked line and bright colors of Corneille. In 2001, the publisher L'Estampe devoted a major retrospective exhibition to Corneille, Corneille, 50 ans d'estampes, dealing with the Cobra years to the 2000s. A book of the same name is published on this occasion by L'Estampe. A tribute was paid to him in 2008 in Auvers-sur-Oise where four places exhibit his works: the church, the castle, the Daubigny museum and the contemporary art gallery. Corneille was buried on September 9, 2010, in the cemetery of Auvers-sur-Oise, near the grave of Vincent van Gogh.
