About the Item
Mezzotint engraving by Frank Sternberg (1858-1924), printed in colors, after 1897 painting by Herbert Gustave Schmalz (1856-1935). Schmalz was an English artist who painted classical, literary, and historical subjects. He was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and Neo-Classicis and was also known for a series of paintings based on the New Testament. After Germany was defeated in World War I, he adopted his mother’s maiden name of Carmichael.
This print is an artist proof on India paper, signed by both artist and engraver.
