Jacques Callot (French, 1592-1635) ‘ Ne voila pas de braves messagers qui vont errants par pays étrangers ? / Are these not fine messengers, straying through foreign lands ? ‘ • Antique Etching • Laid, watermarked paper 12.5 x 23.5 cm • No damages, restoration or dramatic discoloration Jacques Callot was a prolific 17thC artist print maker. He produced hundreds of well known detailed etchings, depicting daily life, such as executions, war, festivals, court life portraying soldiers, clowns, drunkards, gypsies, beggars etc. and he is well known to set his scenes into detailed landscapes featuring in the background. The sheet here on offer is a later (prob. 18thC), mirrored version of the famous image published in the 17thC. However, still an antique print and in fine condition; it will be the privilege of the future owner, to choose how this antique print is to be presented in the future.
