James Jean The Bear Signed Numbered Embellished Print

2023

About the Item

James Jean's "The Bear" is a mesmerizing exploration of myth and nature, blending intricate detail with a narrative steeped in symbolism. The artwork depicts the celestial bear descending to feast upon the earth's abundance. As the bear indulges, the sky turns red, and rabbit sages rush to warn the bear of the impending danger. They urge the bear to exercise restraint, cautioning that hunters will soon return with arrows and spears. The bear, now full, gazes skyward and, as the last rays of sunlight fade, ascends to rest among the stars. Measuring 18-1/2" x 26" for the full print and 15-1/4" x 23-1/2" for the image itself, "The Bear" showcases James Jean's masterful use of holographic and foil detailing, along with drop gloss and sculptural enhancements. These techniques give the artwork a luminous quality, creating depth and a sense of movement within the composition. Each print is hand-signed and numbered by the artist, adding to its exclusivity and value. James Jean is an award-winning artist known for his ability to merge fine art with popular culture. Born in Taiwan and raised in New Jersey, Jean's work spans a variety of mediums, including painting, illustration, and graphic design. He draws inspiration from a wide range of influences, including Renaissance painting, Japanese woodblock prints, and comic books, creating a unique style that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. Jean's work often explores themes of fantasy, memory, and transformation, inviting viewers into complex, dreamlike worlds. In "The Bear," Jean’s influences are evident in the intricate line work and symbolic narrative, combining elements of folklore with a modern sensibility. His ability to blend these influences into a cohesive visual language has made him one of the most sought-after contemporary artists. "The Bear" is a testament to his skill and imagination, making it a prized addition to any collection.

After graduating from high school, Schlote studied philosophy in Bonn until 1968 and then art at the Kunsthochschule Kassel until 1972. From 1973 to 1978 he was a teacher in higher education in Kassel and Hamburg. Simultaneously with the decision to go to Paris, Schlote was offered a professorship at a German art college. In 1978, however, Schlote decided to move to France, where he lived partly in Nice, but mainly in Paris. In 1980 he exhibited for the first time in the Medical Faculty of St. Germain des Pres in Paris. Since 2011 Wilhelm Schlote lives and works in Cologne, Germany.
