About the Item

FIRST SUNDAY is a hand drawn, early limited edition lithograph by the South Carolina artist JONATHAN GREEN printed in 1993, using hand lithography techniques on archival Arches paper, 100% acid free. FIRST SUNDAY depicts a Lowcountry South Carolina black church scene featuring church ladies and children seated waiting for the Sunday service to begin dressed in their Sunday best clothing - crisp full skirted dresses, wide brimmed hats, gloves, and pointed shoes in vivid shades of white, red, yellow, blue, and green. Print size - 25 x 22.5 inches, pristine condition, unframed, Hand signed in pencil by Jonathan Green, inscribed S/P - studio proof aside from the SOLD OUT edition of 250, embossed with publisher's chop mark on lower left margin, print documentation/Certificate of Authenticity provided Image size - 25 x 18.5 inches Edition size - 250, plus proofs Year published - 1993 Printer - J K Fine Art Editions Co., NJ Publisher - Mojo Portfolio, NJ Painter and printmaker Jonathan Green is considered one of the most important contemporary painters of the Southern experience. The artwork of Green is heavily influenced by his Gullah heritage with vividly colored paintings and prints documenting everyday chores, in addition to celebrating Gullah life’s rites of passage. By returning his art to his childhood upbringing, Green has created an autobiographical body of work in addition to documenting a vanishing way of life. Jonathan Green's artwork has been exhibited across the United States and internationally, and is included in the permanent collections of several major museums. Artist statement - "I am drawn to rural environments that afford a sense of space and silence and an opportunity to unobtrusively observe daily functions of others as we all pursue life's mission of work, love and belonging.… It is the small, but critical tasks of daily life that I find most stimulating and reflective of the quality of essential, personal, community, and social values."

BACKYARD Signed Lithograph, Black Couple, African American Heritage, Quilts
By James Denmark
Located in Union City, NJ
BACKYARD by the artist James Denmark is an original hand drawn, limited edition lithograph printed on archival Somerset paper, 100% acid free using traditional hand lithography techniques. BACKYARD is one of Denmark's colorful collage compositions of everyday African American life - a soulful Southern country folk scene featuring a standing woman wearing a red orange skirt, multicolored floral print top, and dark indigo print head wrap; her male companion dressed in blue denim jeans, dark indigo print shirt and denim hat sitting in the backyard as the patchwork quilts flutter on the clothesline. Vivid coloration and textures captivate the eye with variety - deep violet, reds, fiery orange, touches of yellow, dark black and shades of blue - a very strong impression and fine example of hand lithography! Print size - 38 x 23 inches, unframed, mint condition, pencil signed and numbered by James Denmark Edition size - 250, plus proofs Year published - 1996 Printer - J K Fine Art Editions Co., NJ Publisher - Mojo...
