Joseph Paxton
Hand-colored 1834 Joseph Paxton Botanical Engraving of Yellow Trumpet Flowers

1834

About the Item

A hand-colored engraving of yellow trumpet flowers from Sir Joseph Paxton's (1803-1865) "Magazine of Botany and Register of Flowering Plants", published in 1834. This engraving entitled "Adenocalymma comosum" (Yellow Trumpet Vine) was engraved by L. Constans. This colorful hand-colored print is presented in a marbled gold-colored frame with a double mat; the outer cream-colored mat and an inner French mat with cream and beige bands and a marbled gold-colored highlight band. The print is in excellent condition. An additional pair of hand colored engravings of Hibiscus and other flowers from the same publication is available. They are presented in the identical style frame, although slightly smaller, and with a similar but slightly different mat. See item LU117324373831. The pair sells for $700, but the set of three is priced at $950. In the 19th century Europeans were enthusiastically hunting and gathering of previously unknown plants worldwide. These newly discovered botanical specimens were brought to Europe for cultivation. Sir Joseph Paxton included these discoveries as part of his floricultural monthly magazine. Sir Joseph Paxton's (1803-1865) was a talented Victorian garden designer and architect. He created the Crystal Palace for the Exposition of 1851, an immense iron and glass structure. The Crystal Palace was a showcase of Victorian innovation and design. In recognition of his Crystal Palace creation Paxton was knighted. Paxton also created his own Lily House at Chatsworth, where he displayed his prized Water Lilies.
