Juan Maldonado
The Last Supper

1998

About the Item

This serigraph of the "Last Supper" is unusual. It portrays only four men, not the traditional 12 disciples. They are intricately drawn, providing a sense of grandeur. The central figure may be based on Da Vinci, an influence for the artist. Next to this central figure, with both hands extended, is a self-portrait of the artist. It is unknown who the other men may be. The paper used is a cotton and linen blend with a bronze tint for the drawing. The artist kept this print with others, thus, it shows minor signs of handling, but it is in good condition. The piece is unframed. Juan Maldonado produced more than 400 portraits on commission, and focused his work on portraiture. Influenced by the Renaissance masters, especially Leonardo Da Vinci, Maldonado was a pivotal part of the Nuyorican art movement in the 1970s. While he apprenticed in Europe, and studied at the University of Perugia, Italy, he developed his career in NYC where he mentored and taught young artists. Maldonado died in Puerto Rico in December 2016.
