A dynamic and finely executed etching by the Swiss-born artist Karl Bodmer, renowned for his precision and vitality in depicting both landscape and animal subjects. Le Cerf à l’eau (“The Stag in the Water”) portrays a dramatic hunting scene in which a pack of hounds pursues a stag plunging into a river to escape its fate. Bodmer’s technical mastery is evident in the fluid rendering of motion and the intricate interplay of line and shadow that animate the composition. Created during his French period, this etching exemplifies Bodmer’s skill as an engraver and his sensitivity to the natural world. Published by Cadart & Luquet as part of the prestigious Société des Aquafortistes series, which promoted original etchings by leading 19th-century artists.
Excellent, richly inked impression with full margins; light handling marks and faint age toning to the sheet edges; otherwise in very good condition.

Karl Bodmer was a Swiss naturalized French painter born on February 11th, 1809, in Zürich, Switzerland. He was initially a watercolorist and an illustrator, and in his old age, he worked a lot with photography. Bodmer died on October 30th, 1893.
