Kyra Markham
Flag Raising in Leroy Street - Old New York - Vintage New York

1942

About the Item

Flag Raising in Leroy Street. Lithograph. 320x245 mm; 12 5/8x9 5/8 inches. Edition of 25. Signed, titled, dated and inscribed "Ed. 25" in pencil, lower margin. 1942. A very good impression of this scarce lithograph. We have found only 7 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years. An artist as well as an actress, Markham's works seek out every day dramas, assisted by her use of high contrast and shadows. Markham attended the Art Institute of Chicago from 1907 to 1909, when she left the Institute to work at Chicago's Little Theater and later with the Provincetown Players in Massachusetts. She became an illustrator to supplement her acting career and in 1930 attended classes at the Art Students League in New York, where she started to work in lithography. Her employment with the Federal Art Project in 1936 coincided with what are considered the finest examples of her lithographic œuvre. The New York Herald Tribune named Markham among the Federal Art Project's Graphic Arts Division artists who "assist particularly in carrying on the project's graphic work to a success unsurpassed by any of its other departments" after viewing the spring 1937 exhibition of "Recent Fine Prints" at the Federal Art Project Gallery in New York. • Art Deco - Surreal Baby Among the Stars in a Theater
    By Nura Ulreich
    Located in Miami, FL
In most of Nora's work, she combines realism and fantasy. Here, the viewer's position is the back of a theater. In front, there are four raised hands, cheering a monumental image of a sleeping wrapped infant resting on a crescent moon and surrounded by two stars. The infant is floating above the seats and centered in the middle theater curtain...

  • Midnight Madness - Witches on Night Flight
    Located in Miami, FL
Pioneering female illustrator Gwenda Morgan creates an exuberantly complex image of a squad of broom-riding - pointed-hatted witches with black cats in tow. They fly through an inky black moonlit sky and are witnessed by only a rooftop owl. With the simple means of black and white, Morgan has rendered a highly charged composition that pluses with electricity. The whole image is on the cusp of being abstract while being representational. It is brilliantly designed with great attention to detail and is evocative of a sorcerer's malignant powers. Unframed. not signed Printed from the original block as part of the suite of 8 prints that accompanied the limited edition book Diary of a Land Girl, Whittington Press, 2000. The suite of prints was included with the first 50 copies of the book, and a further 8 suites were printed, from which this print comes. Gwenda Morgan (1 February 1908 – 1991) was a British wood engraver. She lived in the town of Petworth in West Sussex. Early life Morgan was born in Petworth, her father having moved there to work at the ironmongers, Austen & Co, of which he later became proprietor. He was the son of a Welsh-born military farrier. Education Following school in Petworth and at Brighton and Hove High School, Morgan, studied at Goldsmiths' College of Art in London from 1926. From 1930 she attended the Grosvenor School of Modern Art in Pimlico where she was taught and strongly influenced by the principal, Iain Macnab. The Grosvenor School was a progressive art school and the championing of wood engraving and linocuts fitted with its democratic approach to the arts. Works Morgan was commissioned to illustrate a number of books published by private presses. For the Samson Press she produced the frontispiece for Duke Hamilton...

  • Civil Rights, Racial Justice Little Rock
    By Philip Evergood
    Located in Miami, FL
"Civil Rights." Evergood's early commentary on racial issues in the 1950s depicts four black men gagged, roped and hanging from a tree. In the background, imprisoned blacks look on through a barbed-wire fence. Whites watch in horror but do nothing to help. Meanwhile, a two-legged and three-headed serpent who symbolizes evil - wraps himself around the tree that physically and symbolically separates the races. This is an important work in the history of American art. It may be one of the very earliest examples of a major American painter doing a major work that challenges racial segregation and injustice at a time when no one else would. The title of the work is inspired by a Historic Supreme Court decision on racial segregation. The Little Rock...
