About the Item

First Communion (of the artist's son) is an original artwork realized by the artist Louis Willaume (Lagny, 1874-1949) in the early 20th Century. There is two prints glued on ivory cardboard: An ink drawing on ivory paper (and an etching with a reverse workshop stamp on brown paper. Good conditions. Louis-Charles Willaume, born on May 31, 1874 in Lagny-sur-Marne and died in 1949 in Bois-Colombes, is a French painter, engraver and illustrator. A pupil of the painters William Bouguereau and Gabriel Ferrier, he exhibited for the first time in 1899 at the National Society of Fine Arts exhibition. In 1920, he received the prize from the Society of Landscapers, and in 1923, the Corot Prize. In 1929, he won the gold medal in the Engravings Section. Together with Maurice Achener, he was an active contributor to the publishing house of the Société de Saint-Eloy, which published the series of "Little Cities of France" in the 1930s. He is the author of more than 500 etchings, of which a large collection is kept in the Department of Prints and Photography of the National Library of France. He illustrated a number of books. The Musée d'Orsay has its painting entitled The Bridge of the Holy Fathers. A street is named after him in Bois-Colombes.

Sievert created limited-edition etchings from copper plates and a hand-turned press which he then individually hand-colored. Sievert’s work won awards, illustrated a children’s book by Leo Tolstoy, was commissioned by the Sierra Club and Golden Gate National Recreation Area to illustrate their publications, and he had his images published in several calendars.
