Old Violinist - Late 19th Century Figurative Lithograph
Located in Soquel, CA
Finely detailed late 19th century chromo-lithograph portrait of a violinist street musician by John George Brown (British, 1831-1913). Many of Brown’s paintings were reproduced in lithography (Chromo-lithograpy), as is the case with the one offered here. Presented in a rustic antique Oak wood frame with giltwood fillet. Image, 15.63"H x 10.63"W.
John George Brown was a British citizen and an American painter born in Durham, England. His parents apprenticed him to the career of glass worker at the age of fourteen, in an attempt to dissuade him from pursuing painting. He studied nights at the School of Design in Newcastle-on-Tyne while working as a glass cutter there between 1849 and 1852, and evenings at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh while working at the Holyrood Glass Works between 1852 ad 1853. After moving to New York City in 1853, he studied with Thomas Seir Cummings at the National Academy of Design where he was elected a National Academician in 1861. Brown was the Academy’s vice-president from 1899 to 1904.
Around 1855, he worked for the owner of the Brooklyn Glass Company, and later he married the daughter of his employer. His father-in-law encouraged his artistic abilities, supporting him financially, letting Brown pursue painting full-time. In 1866, he became one of the charter members of the Water-Color Society, of which he was president from 1887 to 1904. Brown became famous for his depictions of street urchins found of the streets of New York (bootblacks, street musicians, posy sellers, newsboys, etc.).
Brown’s art is best characterized as British genre painting...

Little Chinese Girl
By Ming Wai
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork "Little Chinese Girl" 1982 in a color off set lithograph by renown Chinese/American artist Wai Ming A.K.A Lo Hing Kwok, b.1938. It is hand signed an inscribed A.C (Hors Commerce) in pencil by the artist. The image size is 24.5 x 22 inches, sheet size is 28 x 24.5 inches. It is in excellent condition, has never been framed.
About the artist:
Wai Ming, was born in Canton, South China on November 11, 1938, the son of a school master with nine children. Extremely poor as a child, he was raised in Hong Kong enduring many hardships amidst a chaotic environment of war and refugee settlements. Wai Ming's love for art flourished and he developed his drawing techniques without any art education, just painting what he saw. In the 1960s, Ming found representation in Hong Kong and also took the unusual step of opening his own gallery to display his work in. His primary interest being to capture images of life in fishing villages, or 'fish-folk', who have retained traditional Chinese culture, his work was at home with the sensibilities of many art buyers in Hong Kong. Crossing the ocean in his mid-30s, Wai Ming arrived in San Francisco from Hong Kong in 1974. There, he experienced initial resistance from galleries and the official art world for a variety of reasons, but was ultimately embraced by dealer Jack Swanson...

Jean-Michel Basquiat rose to success during the 1980s. Basquiat’s paintings are largely responsible for elevating graffiti artists into the realm of the New York gallery scene. His spray-painted crowns and scribbled words referenced everything from his Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage, to political issues, pop-culture icons, and Biblical verse. The gestural marks and expressive nature of his work not only aligned him with the street art of Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf, but also the Neo-Expressionists Julian Schnabel and David Salle. “If you wanna talk about influence, man, then you've got to realize that influence is not influence,” he said of his process. After quickly rising to fame in the early 1980s, Basquiat was befriended by many celebrities and artists, including Andy Warhol, with whom he made several collaborative works. At only 27, his troubles with fame and drug addiction led to his tragic death from a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988 in New York, NY. The Whitney Museum of American Art held the artist’s first retrospective from October 1992 to February 1993.

New York The Big Apple with Twin Towers (Hand Signed postcard), ca. 1987
Offset lithograph postcard (hand signed by Valerie Jaudon)
Boldly signed inside the Big Apple in black marker by Valerie Jaudon
6 × 4 inches
Unframed
In the 1980s under charismatic and eccentric Democratic Mayor Ed Koch, the quintessential New Yorker, the city actively began a promotional campaign to attract more visitors, using the "Big Apple" theme - which, for a time, was ubiquitous. The concept stuck to this very day. The NYC Conventions and Visitors Bureau, a city agency, enlisted the help of many top artists in the region, including Valerie Jaudon. The Bureau's advertising campaign, which included materials like this promotional postcard featuring a Big Apple blimp in the center of a panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline with the Twin Towers, was a resounding success. The present work was signed by Valerie Jaudon during a promotional event. This rare, postcard is long out of print and especially desirable as it depicts the New York City skyline with the Twin Towers - before they were destroyed. Extremely collectible when hand signed by Jaudon. We've never seen another signed by her. This was acquired as part of a private collection of artist's autographs from this campaign, so authenticity is guaranteed. Even though the 1980s was also the height of the AIDS epidemic - which hit New York City hard and felled famous artists like Keith Haring, in many other ways, the pre- 9/11 era in New York City, including the "Big Apple" tourism campaign -- seems quaint!

Valerie Jaudon Biography
During the course of Jaudon's distinguished forty-year career, she has been committed to redefining the parameters of abstraction. A member of the original Pattern and Decoration group, she is a representative of important tendencies of the larger Postminimalist movement. Jaudon was the driving force behind the influential 1991 Sidney Janis Gallery exhibition, Conceptual Abstraction (reprised and expanded in 2012 in an exhibition in the Hunter College Times Square Galleries, curated by Pepe Karmel and Joachim Pissarro) and has continued to work toward the development of a grammar of abstraction.
Most recently, Jaudon's work has been included in several national and international museum exhibitions focusing on the Pattern and Decoration movement: With Pleasure: Pattern and Decoration in American Art 1972-1985, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA (2019-2020); Less is a Bore...
