LABYRINTH LADDER is an original, hand drawn, stone lithograph by the Spanish artist Orlando Pelayo, printed by hand in Paris France circa 1973 on archival Arches printmaking paper. LABYRINTH LADDER is a captivating graphic image depicting a group of abstract people expressed as painted black figures against a background of fluid washes in shades of lemon yellow, light orange, lime yellow, and black. The people all are positioned behind a fence-like, cross bar construction; a few figures have their arms resting on the horizontal cross planks. The simplicity and eye-catching color combination of Pelayo's LABYRINTH LADDER attracts the viewer's attention and lures us to wonder who and what this visual scenario before us truly represents.
About the artist:
Orlando Pelayo (1920-1990) Spain, was one of the most internationally successful Asturian artists of the 20th century and one of the most representative of the Spanish School of Paris painters. Pelayo exhibited individually in prestigious galleries in Oran, Algiers, Paris, Sweden, Tokyo, Munich and, of course, Spain.
He was born in Gijón and spent most of his life in Algeria. Pelayo became friendly with Albert Camus. He illustrated his original lithographs in the Literary Essays of Camus.
After WWII Orlando Pelayo moved to Paris, where he was warmly welcomed by the considerable colony of exiled Spanish artists who clustered around Picasso.
His works of art are in many Museums including the Museo d’Arte Moderne in Bilbao, the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias in Orviedo, the Pompidou Centre and the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris.
