Peter Doig’s painterly “Magic Realism” is inspired by everyday sceneries from the artist's surroundings, by art and movies like the horror film Friday the 13th. Doig’s works evoke a mysterious world of its own, which the viewer can access only to a certain point. The interaction with Doig’s works brings the feeling of timelessness, which at any time could be interrupted by unexpected events.
"I try to stay away from discourses, and make it up my own way. I was asked to describe my paintings once, and I said, think of a collage.”— Peter Doig
In a semi-abstract scenery of black-brown darkness painted with expressive and visible brushstrokes in front of sketchy palm trees there is a shining figure of a walking fisherman. The composition presents yet another eerie example of Doig’s work. It evokes a certain loneliness, paired with despair. Doig's fisherman is a wanderer between the worlds, transcending mysterious existence in a magical-realist world.
This edition was created to accompany Peter Doig´s exhibition titled "No Foreign Lands" at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art (January 25 - May 4, 2014).
PETER DOIG
One of the most renowned contemporary artists, Peter Doig, who was born in 1959, in Scotland, was the central figure in the revival of painting in the contemporary art scene during the '90s. At present his oneiric landscapes are highly sought after by world-leading collectors and museums.
After a childhood spent in Trinidad and Canada, Doig only returned to Great Britain at the age of twenty in order to study art. He was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1994, which cemented his public recognition. Themes of magical realism are recurrent through Peter Doig’s paintings, capturing timeless moments of perfect tranquillity. Doig´s dreamlike depictions are often scattered with ghostly human traces in a sensuous palette.
Many of Doig's artworks are depicting landscapes, layered formally and conceptually, somewhat abstract, with a number harking back to the snowy scenes of his childhood lived in Canada. While his works are frequently based on found images (photographs, newspaper clippings, movie scenes, record album covers), they are not painted in a photorealistic. Doig instead uses the photographs simply for reference
“It's as if memories suddenly spring up from the place I have just left and I have to work through them to get to that elsewhere." —Peter Doig
The canoes have become an inspiring image throughout his work; their reflection in the water is a fantasy mirror to the unknown. This inventive style, sensuous palette, and suggestive imagery are also maintained in Peter Doig’s prints through the mastery use of different printmaking techniques. Peter Doig is one of a number of pioneering contemporary figurative artists, and recent major solo exhibitions have been staged at institutional venues, including Fondation Beyeler, Basel; National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh; Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montreal; Gallery Met at the Metropolitan Opera, New York; and Tate Britain, London. His auction record on the painting Rosedale, created in 1991 sold for over $28 million at Phillips New York in May 2017.
Art critic Jonathan Jones said about Doig: "Amid all the nonsense, impostors, rhetorical bullshit and sheer trash that pass for art in the 21st century, Doig is a jewel of genuine imagination, sincere work and humble creativity."

An avid winter sportsman, Peter Doig lived in Zermatt for six weeks in 2020 and for four months in 2021, working out of a studio on the mountain. With his inventive, painterly approach, the artist uses alpine imagery and traditional printmaking techniques to investigate landscape, material, and form. These diverse series of etchings reflects a self-referential process of experiment and innovation in which works continuously evolve into their final form. Together, this body of work pays homage to Doig’s passion for skiing and connection to Zermatt, while also referencing a rich tradition of alpine paintings...Category

- Balaclava - The target in sight -Located in Berlin, DEHeinrich Haberl (1869 Passau to 1934 Munich), Sturmhaube, c. 1900. drypoint, 14 x 10 cm (platemark), 28 x 21 cm (sheet size), 39 x 29 cm (passe-partout), titled "Sturmhaube" in lead at lower left and inscribed "Kaltnadelradierung", signed and locally inscribed "Heinrich Haberl Mchn. [Munich]" at lower right, inscribed again in lead on verso and with old collection stamp. - slightly darkened, fixed and mounted - The target in sight - About the artwork The theatrical "role-portrait" is to be seen against the background of the Rembrandt cult, which reached its climax at the end of the 19th century. The soldier seems to have stepped straight out of Rembrandt's Night Watch (1642) to fix something outside the picture with an alert and ready gaze. The steeply rising brim of the morion frames the gaze and thus perspectivises it as the actual 'pictorial action'. The gaze represents both the vigilant defence and the visionary goal of the battle. Not only the subject, but also the style of the etching needle reflect Rembrandt's understanding of the times. Strong contrasts of light and dark are created in a virtuoso free stroke, without losing the effect of the reflections on the helmet and in the eyes. This shows a kinship with the early prints of Lovis Corinth, who also saw himself as an artist in the role of the knight. Against this background, Haberl's picture can also be seen as a representation of his artistic self-image. About the artist Heinrich Haberl first attended the art school in Nuremberg and from 1892 studied at the Munich Academy. There he was a master student of Johann Leonhard von Raab, Rudolf von Seitz, Franz von Defregger...Category
