SHOUT by the African American woman artist Samella Lewis, is an original hand drawn lithograph printed using hand lithography techniques on archival Rives BFK paper, 100% acid free. SHOUT depicts a church service gathering spotlighting a fervid worshiper standing with arms stretched overhead, feeling the spirit as the preacher sermonizes and other engaged congregants bear witness. The expression SHOUT refers to a part of African American cultural history which is a transcendent religious ritual first practiced by African slaves in the West Indies and the United States in which worshipers move in a circle while shuffling and stomping their feet and clapping their hands.

Samella Lewis, (February 27, 1923 – May 27, 2022) New Orleans, Louisiana, was an artist, educator, scholar, curator, writer, administrator, editor, filmmaker and collector and is renowned for her contributions to African American art and art history. She studied printmaking with lifelong friends Elizabeth Catlett, Diego Rivera and Jacob Lawrence. She is best known for her figurative works on paper, including many series of lithographs and screen prints that illustrate images representing the age of civil rights and black liberation.
