Timofey Smirnov
Canon (facsimile print in black and white)

2016

About the Item

The facsimile print made on a paper with size of 100x70cm (39.3x27.5 in). The dominant colors are black and white with a greyish gamma. His pencil drawing is a technique so exquisite that an allusion arises with an old engraving in mezzotint technique or a dry needle. The color goes from black to white - all grey tones of different degrees of saturation. Asking why would you use a pencil, you can get an answer that when almost every day new technologies are used to create works of art and design, the author believes that right now the use of such a simple and archaic tool like a pencil is truly revolutionary. A pencil is an alpha and omega, the beginning and the end in the artist’s work. In each drawing, the artist consciously mixes classical genres not popular in contemporary art - portrait, landscape, still life, which he combines with simple everyday objects or objects whose utilitarian meaning is lost, resulting in a genre of metaphysical work. At the heart of his artistic utterance, the author constantly uses the poetic metaphor, which is formed from the memories of cultural images of the past, as well as from the modern author of the sensations of the world and sources of information. Timofey Smirnov is a unique graphic artist from Russia. He had graduated with honors from the Surikov’s Moscow State Academic Institute. In 2008 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Arts for the series of graphic works "Journey around my Room" In 2013 he got a Grant of the President of the Russian Federation for the best project in the field of contemporary art PhD in Art Criticism, has scientific publications. The works of Timofey Smirnov are in the best collections in Russia, the UK, the UAE, as well as in Spain and France. His works were shown and presented on most major art fairs all over the World and being critically acclaimed by famous art dealers. Last time in the USA he was presented by the Want Art Gallery on Reveal Art Fair in Saratoga Springs, NY in 2018.
