1981

About the Item

Hand signed and numbered. Artist's proof, plus 25 prints in Roman numbers. Antonio Zancanaro - also known as TONO - (1906-1985). After a promising start in a sports career, he began to paint as a self-taught in 1932. He trained mainly in Florence, in contact with Ottone Rosai, and in Milan, where he attended Ernesto Treccani, Renato Guttuso and other exponents of the anti-fascist cultural environment. He traveled abroad a lot, especially during the regime, and was always a member of the Communist Party. His production moved above all in the realism field, with pictorial cycles depicting the most humble social realities both in the north and in the south of Italy. Particularly well known was the series by Gibbo, a surreal and caricature character inspired by Mussolini.
