1923

About the Item

Yokihi is an original print realized by Tsukioka Kôgyo in 1923. Mixed colored woodblock print. This print is from the series "One Hundred No Dramas (Nogaku hyakuban)", printed by Matsuki Heikichi (seal on lower right) Signed Kōgyo (Japanese character) on lower right. On the lower right there is Kōgyo red seal which refers to the reference: no. 13, p. 170 in The Beauty of Silence: Nō and Nature Prints by Tsukioka Kōgyo (1869-1927), Robert Schaap & J. Thomas Rimer, Hotei Publishing, 2010. Good conditions except for very light stains along the margins. Include passepartout: 49.6 x 39.5 cm This precious print represents Yōkihi, the main character of the namesake play written by Komparu Zenchiku (1405-1470?), in which the Chinese Tang dynasty emperor Genshō grieves over his favorite mistress Yōhiki. The beautiful woman wears a precious red kimono decorated by floral motifs and gilded and silver insert. Kogyo Tsukioka (Tokio 1869-1927) was born in Tokyo in 1869 as Hanyu Sadanosuke. The adopted son of the famed ukiyo-e artist Yoshitoshi, Kogyo studied both painting and woodblock printing under him. He later studied with Gekko. Kogyo did a number of nature studies and Sino-Japanese war prints but is primarily known for his images of the Noh theatre, a traditional aristocratic form of Japanese performing arts. Unlike most classical ukiyo-e prints, his works have an almost painterly quality and use much gold and silver for the Noh costume embellishments. These prints often required very skill engravers and printers to produce.

She studied at the Heatherley School of Art in Chelsea. The first public exhibition of her work was in 1919. Her drawings were exhibited at the Brook Street Gallery in 1921.[ In 1922 she became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. Various large exhibitions of her works were held during her lifetime. Her images typically draw on the Art Deco movement and ideas of Oriental culture, despite the fact that she never visited the Far East. She was a popular artist, even during a time period when the art market, and decorative arts particularly, was suffering from the economic crisis of the 1930s. She lived in Bexley in Kent. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Angkor Wat, in its beauty and state of preservation, is unrivaled. Its mightiness and magnificence bespeak a pomp and a luxury surpassing that of a Pharaoh or a Shah Jahan, an impressiveness greater than that of the Pyramids, an artistic distinctiveness as fine as that of the Taj Mahal. Angkor Wat is located about six kilometers (four miles) north of Siem Reap, south of Angkor Thom...
