About the Item

Tully Filmus was an American realist painter. Well known for his Judaica Paintings done with warmth and sensitivity, Jewish subject matter was not by any means his only work. He was born Naftuli (Anatol) Filmus in Ataki, Bessarabia, (now part of Moldova) in 1903. In 1913, his parents Michael and Eva Filmus moved the family to Philadelphia. From 1924-7, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Henry McCarter. A scholarship in 1927 enabled him to spend two years in Europe, where he studied for a period with Andre Lhote in Paris. In New York, he shared a studio with Willem de Kooning in the early 1930's, and worked on Works Progress Administration projects in New York City in 1936. From 1937 to 1939 he taught at the American Artists School in New York and from 1938 to 1950 at the Cooper Union School of Art. In 1930, he moved to New York, where he took a job with a small art agency where he became friends with Anton Refregier and Willem de Kooning. In 1936, he joined American artists in contributing painting to Biro-Bidjan Museum in the U.S.S.R. In 1937, he exhibited at the American Artists Congress, ACA Galleries, and joined the faculty of the American Artists School. In 1938, he also joined the faculty of the Cooper Union School of Art. He has exhibited in the Whitney Museum Annual and the American Artists Congress. One of his paintings was acquired by the permanent collection of New York University. Other museums that have shown his work include the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, City Art Museum of St. Louis, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Berkshire Museum. While his portraits were usually of family and friends, Mr. Filmus also painted commissioned portraits of figures like Eleanor Roosevelt and Jonas Salk.
