About the Item
Original 1970s poster designed by artist Silavno Campeggi. In the United States Campeggi is considered among the most important graphic artists in the history of American cinema. Among the most famous posters and playbills designed by the Florentine artist are those of such memorable films as "Casablanca," "Singing in the Rain," "An American in Paris," "West Side Story," "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," "Winners and Losers," "Exodus," "Breakfast at Tiffany's," "Ben Hur," and "Bambi."
Born in Florence on Jan. 23, 1923, Campeggi attended art school in the Tuscan capital as a student of Ottone Rosai and Ardengo Soffici, then began working as an illustrator of books and newspapers for various graphic companies. Moving to Rome after the war, he joined the studio of painter Orfeo Tamburi and met poster artist Luigi Martinati, becoming attracted to film posters.
Because of his skill in portraiture and his congenial inventiveness, he worked, signing himself "Nano," for major American film companies such as Metro Goldwyn Mayer, Universal, Paramount, Warner Bross, RKo, Dear Film, making more than 3,000 posters for Hollywood.
