Printer: Printer's Proof, Copenhagen Edition: 10, plus proofs Signed and numbered in pencil by the artist Valérie Collart explores, in her work, the relationship between sculpture and photography. She reflects on the penetrability of those two media by experimenting with their boundaries. The ambivalence of this artistic practice raises the question of whether Collart’s work is image or object based. The artist’s photogravure series “Césarée” represents in this sense a material meeting between the two-dimensionality of a photo documentation and the three-dimensionality of the object. Collart’s work seems to adhere to the postmodern fascination with the archaic that uses the digital virtuality to reconstruct the figurative there where the figure and the substance seem to disappear. Her fascination with the concept of a monument, the artist’s pseudo-archaic pillars, crystallise an image of beauty frozen in time. Printer’s Proof adheres to ‘old school’ intaglio print studios. We work with classical techniques and use only the finest quality papers and inks when printing the artists’ limited fine art printmaking projects. All of our editions are printed by hand. When printing an intaglio plate the printer distributes the ink (manually) all over the plate's surface. Then applying a piece of tarlatan cloth the printer would clean the surface of the plate leaving the ink only in the areas of the plate that are incised or etched below the plate's surface. Once this is accomplished the plate would be placed on the etching press and a piece of hand made damp paper will be placed on top of it to be run together through the etching press. The pressure of the press forces the paper into the incised lines or grooves picking up the ink from the plate's indentations. This technique requires the printer to repeat the same procedure every single time a plate should be run through the press.
