Filled with countless allusions from various art forms, from cinema to theatre, from poetry to music, Varvara Drobina's artworks with their surrealistic touch are strikingly powerful and have a lasting aftertaste. Decorative without becoming superficial, illustrative without becoming restrictive, they speak at both figurative and abstract levels. Born in St.Petersburg, Russia, Varvara Drobina is a professional artist currently completing her final year at the prestigious St.Petersburg Art Academy, where she specializes in graphic arts, printmaking techniques, illustration and book design. In 2018, Varvara was selected for an exchange programme with the Beaux-Arts de Paris, where she studied under the tutelage of Wernher Bouwens and the fresco master Philippe Bennequin. Varvara's work is represented by our gallery, The Russian Ark, since 2021. The present work depicting a woman under a curtain of water is produced in the linocut technique, which is a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum is used for a relief surface. A design is cut into the linoleum surface with a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel or gouge, with the raised (uncarved) areas representing a reversal (mirror image) of the parts to show printed. The linoleum sheet is inked with a roller (called a brayer), and then impressed onto paper or fabric. The actual printing is done by hand using a printing press. As such no two prints are exactly the same. This original artwork comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the artist.
