About the Item

The 1862 original lithography by François-Edmond Pâris, titled "Souvenirs de Jérusalem - Chapelle du Saint Sépulcre," stands as a testament to both artistic skill and historical significance. Extracted from the first and singular edition of this splendidly illustrated work, the lithograph captures a pivotal moment in the narrative of Jerusalem's sacred landscape. At its focal point lies the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, a site of profound religious significance revered by Christians as the location of Jesus Christ's crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. Through the meticulous artistry of Pâris, viewers are transported to this sacred space, enveloped in the solemnity and reverence that pervades its ancient walls. The lithograph is a product of the 1861 expedition to Jerusalem undertaken by the third French Mediterranean squadron, a momentous voyage chronicled in Pâris's work. It offers a window into the cultural and religious milieu of Jerusalem during the 19th century, capturing the essence of a city steeped in centuries of pilgrimage and devotion. A striking feature of the lithograph is its vibrant color palette, a testament to the craftsmanship of lithographers Hubert Clerget and Gaildrau. Each brushstroke brings to life the intricate details of the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, from the delicate carvings adorning its façade to the flickering light that illuminates its sacred interior. François-Edmond Pâris's distinguished naval career, spanning three major expeditions and culminating in his appointment as rear admiral in 1858, lends further weight to the significance of this lithograph. His firsthand experiences at sea and his keen eye for detail imbue the work with a sense of authenticity and authority, offering viewers a glimpse into the maritime world of the 19th century. As a historical artifact and a work of art, the lithograph serves as a testament to the enduring allure of Jerusalem and the timeless appeal of its sacred sites. Through its evocative imagery and meticulous craftsmanship, it invites viewers to embark on a journey through time and space, to explore the mysteries of faith and the enduring power of religious devotion. Military - Religion - Israel Plate taken from the first and only edition of this magnificently illustrated work. Account of the 1861 visit to Jerusalem undertaken by the third French squadron in the Mediterranean. Very beautiful colors of the 12 lithographed plates. François-Edmond Pâris joined the French Navy in 1820 and participated in three major expeditions: the first under d'Urville aboard the Astrolabe (1826-9), and two under Laplace on the Favorite (1829-32) and Artémise (1837-40). In 1858, he was appointed rear admiral and given command of the third French squadron in the Mediterranean. Lithographers: Hubert Clerget & Gaildrau - Arthus Bertrand Lemercier Paris
