Magnolia Parviflora

About the Item

Flora and Sylva Henry G. Moon (1857-1905) London, 1903 Chromolithography. They say that luck is just an opportunity that is taken. It was certainly true for Henry G. Moon when he answered William Robinson’s ad for an illustrator. Robinson has been heralded as the father of the ‘wild garden’ the prototype for the 20th Century English garden. Finding the towering glory of trees and the stunning shapes of flowers inseparable in nature, Robinson determined to create a reference combining the beauty of both. As for Moon, forced to seek clerical employment when his once prosperous family was financially crippled by the death of his father, he pressed on with an avocation for illustration. Influenced by Robinson’s natural approach to landscaping, Moon’s drawings captured the beauty flowers in their stark drama. The turn of a petal, the twists of a stem, the dappling light on a leaf are all captured in the reality that is nature. Kew Gardens, Sander’ Nursery, and other magnificent gardens of Britain provided Moon with willing subjects. Without embellishments and flourishes of artistic license taken by many Victorian illustrators, H.G. Moon created an image both academically correct and aesthetically attractive. It was an immediate success. Moon’s good fortune continued when he met Frederick Sander’s and went on to both illustrate Sander’s unparallel tome on orchids, Reichenbachia, and marry Sander’s lovely daughter.
