About the Item

This poster was made around 1940s by Henry Lemonnier 🇫🇷 (1890-1954) a French poster artist. He worked for various printers as well as in advertising. The original Cordial - Médoc liqueur produced since 1878 by G. A. Jourde in Bordeaux, France, is truly one of the world's great classic liqueurs. According to the secret family recipe dating back to 1878 Cordial - Médoc contains over 15 different fruits, spices and herbs. A whimsical harlequin figure, dressed in yellow and red hearts, raises a glass in salute while embracing a large bottle of Cordial-Médoc. The image exudes warmth and theatrical flair, evoking the spirited world of cabarets and carnivals. The bold use of color—sunshine yellow, heart-red, and a rich emerald gradient—makes the composition pop with festive charm. Lemonnier’s playful style, with simplified shapes and dramatic contrasts, captures the Art Deco sensibility evolving into wartime escapism. The tagline at the bottom, “La liqueur qui réjouit le cœur” (The liqueur that gladdens the heart), reinforces the poster’s emotive appeal—a drink for celebration, comfort, and camaraderie. Cordial Médoc is renowned for its stimulating digestive properties and is the main component of many famous drinks and cocktails.
