About the Item

Herbert Morton Stoops paints a stark warning against "Careless Talk" in this graphic image from 1944. The grisly features of a paratrooper shot dead during an aerial battle are a stern reminder to the American public on the home-front to be mindful of what they say in public. During the Second World War, there was a constant concern in the United States about inappropriate information being overheard or intercepted by enemy agents both domestically and abroad. Herbert Morton Stoops (1888-1948) began his career as a staff artist for the San Francisco Chronicle. He enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago while working at the Chicago Tribune as an illustrator. His most notable body of illustrations and artwork was for the Blue Book, a literary pulp magazine. He served in World War I as a First Lieutenant and released a book of his illustrations shortly after end of the war. In New York, Stoops studied under Harvey Dunn and soon became a popular magazine artist, whose work appeared in Cosmopolitan and Good Housekeeping, as well as covers for the American Legion Magazine. During World War II he executed several posters for the office of War Information. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters
