About the Item

MOONCAKE By Insane 51 2019 • Limited edition screenprint (211 of 250) • Signed by the artist A Narrative for the Work In Mooncake, Insane 51 (Stathis Tsavalias) invites you into a poetic interplay of luminosity and shadow, where familiar forms dissolve into layered illusions. The composition feels at once celestial and intimate — the soft glow of a moonlit sphere, a delicate balance of presence and hidden depths. As the viewer’s gaze drifts, other shapes emerge, hints of another image lying beneath the visible, coaxed into view by the subtle tension between red and cyan. It is the kind of work that rewards stillness: the more time you spend, the more the visual language opens up, revealing the ghostly whispers of an alternate frame concealed within. Though on the surface Mooncake evokes a minimalist elegance — a quiet orb, softly modulated gradients — the true complexity is structural. Insane 51’s technique of overlay and optical contrast allows dual readings: one in conventional ambient light, another when the work is viewed through stereoscopic filters. This duality becomes a metaphor: light reveals, light conceals — perception is an act of unveiling. The image rests somewhat away from the wall, as if it hovers or breathes in the ambient space. The clean borders and the subtle framing amplify the tension between flatness and depth — a quiet portal into a realm of shifting vision. Artist Biography & Influences Stathis Tsavalias, better known under his moniker Insane 51, was born in Greece in 1992 and lives and works in Athens. His artistic journey began in 2007 when, at age 15, he picked up the spray can and embraced the world of graffiti. Over time, he developed an approach that merges street art freedom with rigorous technical ambition. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts and also pursued graphic and applied arts, training which underpins the visual precision and compositional discipline seen in his public and studio work. Insane 51 is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of 3D or double‑exposure urban art. His hallmark is a layered, stereoscopic method in which he superimposes two images — one in red, the other in cyan — to trigger visual illusions of depth. Depending on how light falls, and whether one uses stereoscopic filters, different aspects of the image come into prominence. In interviews, he has noted that he arrived at this approach through experimentation, famously being inspired by 3D glasses and challenging himself to create illusions that shift with optical perspective. His visual influences traverse both street art and photorealism. Early in his trajectory, he worked broadly with color and form; later, he gravitated toward realism and compositional layering. Artists such as Sake, Belin, Smug, and El Mac are often mentioned in relation to his mural practice, particularly for their evocative realism and mastery of portraiture. But Insane 51’s most unique departure comes from his optical experimentation — fusing meticulously rendered imagery with hidden, subliminal layers, a conceptual tension between what is seen and what lies beneath. Across festivals in Europe and beyond, Insane 51’s murals have engaged public spaces with depth and surprise. In his studio work, including limited edition prints like Mooncake, he transposes that same language of perceptual play into more contained, introspective forms.
