$9,500

About

An original signed color aquatint on BFK Rives wove paper after Spanish artist Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) titled "La Fenetre de L'atelier a la Californie (The Window Of The Studio La Californie)", 1959. This artwork is sometimes referred to as "Intérieur Rouge avec Transatlantique Bleu". Hand red pencil signed by Picasso lower right (signature is faded, this is consistent with all examples of this work today) and numbered lower left. Limited edition: 217/300. Printed and published by Atelier Crommelynck in Paris, France. BFK Rives watermark lower right and "Atelier Crommelynck Paris" blindstamp/chopmark lower left. Reference: Maeght 2102. Provenance: private collection - Charlottesville, VA. Recently framed with moulding from Spain, mats from Holland, and filet from Italy. All archival. Framed size: 30.5" x 24.75". Image size: 16" x 13". Faint UV staining in margins, in otherwise excellent condition with strong colors. Pablo Picasso authorized this color aquatint to be created after an oil on canvas painting he executed in 1958 titled "La Fenetre de L'atelier". It measures 13.75" x 10.75". It sold at Christie's London on October 3rd, 2017 for $1,200,000 dollars, Sale: 14905, Lot: 54. Born in Málaga, Spain, in 1881, Pablo Picasso, became one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century and the creator (with Georges Braque) of Cubism. A Spanish expatriate painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and stage designer, Picasso was considered radical in his work. After a long prolific career, he died on April 8, 1973, in Mougins, France. The enormous body of Picasso's work remains, however, and the legend lives on—a tribute to the vitality of the "disquieting" Spaniard with the "sombrepiercing" eyes who superstitiously believed that work would keep him alive. For nearly 80 of his 91 years, Picasso devoted himself to an artistic production that contributed significantly to—and paralleled the entire development of—modern art in the 20th century.
