About the Item

Juan Carlos Alom (Cuba, 1964) 'Sólo tú cabes en la palma de mi mano' (only you fit in the palm of my hand), 2004 Photoengraving on paper 30 x 22.1 in. (76 x 56 cm.) Edition of 99 ID: ALO1534-001 Hand-signed by author in pencil Unframed Juan Carlos Alom (Havana, 1964) is a Cuban photographer and experimental filmmaker whose work captures the essence of identity and life on the island. His work combines magical realism, Afro-Cuban traditions, and a poetic perspective on social and spiritual realities. He began his career in the 1990s, as part of a generation that revitalized Cuban photography. His documentary and artistic approach is characterized by an analog aesthetic that highlights the texture and depth of his images. His photographic series and short films have been exhibited internationally, establishing his presence in the contemporary art scene. Among his solo exhibitions are Criaturas de isla in Havana and Nacidos para ser libres in Mexico. He has participated in major group exhibitions such as Iconocracia – Contemporary Cuban Photography in Spain and Cuba – Fiction and Fantasy in Brazil. In 2000, Time magazine recognized him as one of the 100 most important Latin American photographers of the millennium. His work is part of prestigious collections such as the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern in Spain, the Ludwig Forum for International Art in Germany, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in the United States. Through his lens, Alom offers a profound and evocative vision of Cuban culture, exploring its symbols, myths, and realities with a unique sensitivity.
