Excerpted from the folio, This album, The seventh in a series dedicated to Mr. Pierre Lévy's collection, was printed in M examples on Arches vélin. Printing was finished on November 24, 1972 by Mourlot for lithographs of the paintings of the Fauves and by Fequet and Baudier for typography. Fernand Mourlot, Paris 1972.
ACHILLES-EMILE OTHON FRIESZ (1879–1949) was a French artist was born in Le Havre. It was at Lycée that he met Raoul Dufy who would become his lifelong friend. They were both at the Le Havre School of Fine Arts from 1895-96 and then went to Paris together. It was in Paris that Friesz met Matisse, Marquet and Rouault. Because of his association, he too became a Fauvist and exhibiting with the group in 1907. In the years following, Friesz realized that his roots were in the past and he opened a studio in 1912 and taught there until 1914 and the war broke out. He would join the army and stay until the end of the war. He returned after the war to Paris and remained there until he passed in 1949. During his later time in Paris, he returned to his love for the past styles he had learned from Charles Lhuillier a former teacher and was influenced by Poussin, Chardin and Corot. He painted landscapes, still lifes and figures.
